Fishing as an occupation and a way of life has been present in the Lapland region for centuries. The local people’s diet has generally been based on what the forests, lakes and rivers have to offer: game, arctic berries and root vegetables, and of course fish.
December, January and February are known as “the heart of winter” as they are usually very cold and dark months. However that doesn’t slow down those people for whom fishing is a way of life.
Elias Teriö, the man on the front page, is developing fishing tourism in the North and he himself is a genuine fanatic fisherman.
“December is the high season for ice fishing whitefish. What could be better than freshly-caught whitefish for your Christmas meal,” he sighs while sat on frozen Lake Kesankijärvi in a -30°C degree frost, ice rod in hand.
Winter starts to turn to spring at the beginning of March and this season of sunny skiing days lasts until the end of April. Ice fishing is the most popular kind of fishing at this time of year. You’ll have a good chance of catching some big pike and perch at the local lakes.
