Discover Finland’s largest ski trail network at Ylläs! With 330 km in all, the trails offer plenty of choice for skiers of all abilities. There are 38 km lit ski trails, and you can take your dog along certain sections. All trails have separate track sets for classic skiing and a wider, groomed lane for skating. Walking along the trails is not allowed.
These winter trails are intended for both hiking and cycling. Totalling 100 km in all, they skirt around the Ylläsjärvi and Äkäslompolo villages and lead you further out into the fells. There are both relaxing trails for a walk, and more demanding routes to challenge yourself with. The trails are levelled down at regular intervals.
Enjoy the peace of the Great Outdoors along the marked snowshoe trails. They are not maintained, nor suitable for ordinary shoes, which will just sink down into the snow. These trails lead you to beautiful spots such as to the Kuertunturi or Kukastunturi fell summits. If you have never used snowshoes, try some out first by walking about on them in easier terrain near the villages, or set off from the Kellokas Visitor Centre.
In the Ylläs area there are over 400 km of snowmobile trails. Please stay on the trails, as snowmobiling anywhere else is forbidden.
There are a couple of dozen wilderness cafes in and around Ylläs, located along the various winter trail routes. Coffee and delicious cakes and sweets are on sale, not forgetting salty snacks and even soup for lunch. Take some cash with you, as not all sites can accept payment by card. Check the opening times beforehand either on the Internet, from info boards along the way, or look at the ads in “Kuukkeli”, the local paper (in Finnish).
If you want to relax by the heat of the open fire and eat your packed lunch, have a stop at one of the campsites or lean-tos around Ylläs.
All marked ski tracks and winter biking, walking and snowshoe trails can be found on traditional paper maps for winter sports. It’s worth buying the latest edition to get the most up-to-date info on new routes and trails. Campfire sites, lean-tos and teepees are also marked on the map. The 10 euro fee is used to cover route and trail maintenance costs. Snowmobile trails are shown on a separate map. Look for real-time info about route and trail conditions at the Ylläs E-route and trail service point. Using this facility costs 10 euros, and you can register online at www.yllas.fi/shop
Route and trail maintenance services update their status daily on Facebook. Go to the Ylläs Ski Trails and Ylläs Bike Trails page for more info. Also check out the Pallas-Ylläs Outdoors trail tips on Instagram and Facebook.
Hiking and cycling trails often cross ski tracks, roads and snowmobile routes. Be especially careful at these crossing points, and always use the trail for what it is intended for. For example, walking along the ski tracks is not allowed. Please follow this advice to make the very best of your day out in the Arctic!
