Daypack rucksack – it should sit comfortably on your back and be resistant to sweat and melting snow. Capacity 25-35 litres.
Map – Always take a map and compass with you as signs may sometimes be misleading, even on marked trails. Mobile phone map apps are no use if the battery is flat.
Drink bottle – “Water, the oldest elixir of all”, as the Finnish saying goes. The more liquids you pack the better! You can also drink water from springs and streams in the national parks, especially if your stomach is not over-sensitive.
Thermos flask – In cold and dry weather, breathing can cause dehydration of up to 2 dl every hour. Sweating during strenuous physical activity simply increases it, about 0.5-1 litre per hour. Although you won’t easily feel thirsty in cold weather, it’s still important to drink something. When you finally feel thirsty, dehydration will be well under way. However, coffee is not a good choice as it aids dehydration. Warm juice contains sugar that helps to maintain your energy levels.
Seat pad – although you can relax your muscles during a break, a seat pad will stop your backside from getting cold.
Spare jacket – essential for all treks. A good jacket is both warm and windproof.
Matches – You never know when they might be a life saver. Pack some matches in a waterproof bag to keep them dry. If you plan to make a bonfire, a knife or small axe is an essential item.
Packed lunch – you should also pack protein bars, peanuts, chocolate or similar as an emergency supply. You don’t need to be in danger to eat them – if your companions are getting grouchy, a bite to eat will increase their blood sugar levels. Then you’ll see how pleasant your trek becomes...
Change of clothing – a sweaty shirt starts to feel chilly very quickly. To keep warm it is worth taking a clean, dry shirt, preferably made of wool, in your daypack.
First aid kit – the very first time you need it, you’ll always be grateful for it. Even just a sticking plaster can save your day.
Headlamp – keep it with you in your daypack at all times, except in mid-summer.
