Mosquito, midge, bloodsucker, buzzing whiner – “a beloved child has many names”, as the Finnish saying goes. Say what you will about these small insects, they do make your skin itch and evoke some strong feelings.
Even so, our whinging friends are part of the beauty of evolution, and – believe it or not – they have their own part to play on our planet.
They are a source of food for everything else. Predatory insects and beetles devour the larvae, and birds eat the adult mosquitoes.
So we just have to learn to live with them. The best way to do that is to keep away from wet areas like streams and bogs.
It’s worth taking some mosquito repellent with you on a trek outdoors. You can buy it in local stores and chemists. There is a wide selection, scented and otherwise, lotion and spray.
If chemicals are not your thing, try some ecological non-toxic repellents. Look for ‘pikiöljy’ (pitch oil), a traditional alternative, as well as various herbal products.
If you sit outdoors in the evening, you could always take along a battery-operated or chargeable repellent appliance. There’s all kinds available. Still, smoke from a bonfire helps to keep the mosquitos away as well.
We Finnish people are very good at inventing weird and wonderful mosquito traps, for example from used pantyhose (!) Believe me, you really won’t want to get into that... Better to stick to the repellents on sale.
