Most reindeer calves are born in May, but calving continues into June. The calves are born once the snow has partially melted and there is less risk of hard frosts and fresh snowfall.
The gestation period for reindeer lasts for 220 days on average. For buck calves it usually lasts two days longer than for female calves. Normally one calf is born at a time. Calf twins are rare and their survival is even rarer.
All the hairs in calf’s fur are full of air. On average there are about 3200 hairs per square centimetre of fur. At one month of age its fur is replaced by so-called calf’s fur, which by autumn has become similar in structure to adult reindeer fur.
The reindeer calf weighs about 4-6 kilos at birth, and is totally dependent on its mother’s milk for nourishment. In summer, a calf’s weight can grow by 500 grammes every 24 hours.
Calf horns already start to grow in their first few weeks of life.
