”I got to know Finland over twenty years ago when I worked in Helsinki. This is only my fifth trip to Northern Finland: four times in Saariselkä, and now my first trip to Äkäslompolo. I travel alone and rented a car to get more easily from place to place.
Every year my wife and I each have a week to ourselves. She enjoys hot weather, but I prefer the cold and just love the frosts. Once you take your clothes off in hot weather, there’s no way to get cooler, but in cold weather it’s just a question of dressing properly.
I’m surprised how little snow there is here. There’s more in the Alps, but then the weather isn’t as nice. The temperature there ranges from -5° to +5°C, and it’s overcrowded as well. Here there’s room to relax and enjoy the fantastic nature and the world’s cleanest air. It’s so quiet that I can just walk in peace and quiet without being distracted by sporting events.
Working in Zürich, I’m constantly surrounded by hustle and bustle. Every year I need a week by myself just to wind down.
I came to Äkäslompolo because I found some Northern Lights’ photos taken by local photographers. This holiday week has been cloudy, but perhaps tI’ll get lucky tonight. I’ll put on a lot of warm clothes, take a thermos full of hot tea, then I’ll come back here to Äkäsmylly and sit and wait.”
