Originally from Hawaii, Stand Up Paddle Boarding, aka SUP (“suppailu” in Finnish), rode a wave into Ylläs a few summers back. You can see paddle boarders balancing on longboards during the summer at Ylläs, especially on the Äkäslompolo and Ylläs lakes.
You don’t need any previous skills to paddle board, as you’ll pick it up right from the start. Staying upright is no problem either, especially in calm waters. If you do happen to fall off, it’s easy to get back on the board again.
If you’re up for it, your whole body can get a good training session on a paddle board. People say that paddling technique somewhat resembles cross-country skiing; that is, while your stomach muscles help you control the turns, your whole body gets a workout when paddle boarding.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding on Finnish lakes is truly an exotic experience. Ask about SUP board rentals at sports shops in the area.
