The Visitor Centres offer their services to both nature lovers and family groups on holiday. Serious hikers should ask for the latest information on cabins, trails and permits as required.
The “Meän Elämä” (Our life) exhibition at the Kellokas Visitor Centre displays the history of the villages next to the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. The streams that flow from the fells into the Tornio-Muonionjoki river, and the forests, marshes and meadows that surround it. This is the source around which local life has developed.
Kellokas Visitor Centre also includes Galleria Kellokas and its changing exhibitions, maintained by the Artists’ Association of Lapland. For its part, “Meän Galleria” (Our gallery) is run by Metsähallitus, the national forest authority.
Along the trail that circles the Visitor Centre you will find sculptures created by local artists, while the Logging Museum features the history of logging and lumberjacks in the area.
Located on the slopes of the Pallastunturi fells, you can hike up to the highest fell peaks in Western Lapland from the Pallastunturi Visitor Centre. It is a natural starting point for day trips or hiking, and a pleasant base for a short stay. In winter, ski trails set off in all directions right outside the main entrance.
The Visitor Centre’s exhibition “From Forest to Fell Peaks” explains the changes in flora and fauna when ascending from the pine forests to fell-side birch woods and treeless fell peaks.
The changing exhibitions present short films on fell environment and history can be viewed in the lecture rooms at both Visitor Centres.
There is no entrance fee to the Visitor Centre exhibitions. Guided group tours (fee payable) must be booked in advance.
Last November a new exhibition called Arctic Expo 2017 was opened at the Arktikum Science Centre in Rovaniemi, a.k.a. “Lapland’s capital”.
Arctic Expo 2017 demonstrates how Finnish people have adapted themselves to Arctic conditions, and how this has been developed into cutting-edge Arctic expertise.
Arctic Expo 2017 is open to the public at Arktikum until 28 January 2018. The exhibition is part of the Finland 100 centenary festivities programme. For more information, see www.arktikum.fi.
